Is It Love or Holiday Hormones? Understanding Seasonal Lust as We Enter 2026

When the year starts winding down, the air shifts, literally and spiritually.

The weather cools (ATL is an exception since 1 day the high is 33 degrees and the next day or week, it's around 60/70 degrees). Still...the blankets get softer.

The nights get longer.

And suddenly...we wanna cuddle, claim, connect...and sometimes get closer than we planned.

December has a way of making even the most emotionally disciplined person feel a little more tender. A little more needy. A little more turned on by the idea of closeness.

And that's not random.

But here's the real question we don't ask enough...

Are you actually falling deeper in love...or is it seasonal lust dressed in a warm cashmere sweater?

Let's talk about it.

The Holiday Hormone Effect (Yes, It's Real)

Winter does something to the body.

Shorter days increase melatonin, which affects sleep and mood. At the same time, serotonin levels drop, which  can leave us craving comfort, reassurance, and closeness. Our circadian rhythm shifts, and our bodies naturally seek warmth, physically and emotionally.

And what feels warmer than...Soft Skin, Familiar Arms, Slow Kisses, Lingering Touch, Someone Choosing You At the End of the Year...

That combination can make desire feel stronger, heavier, and more emotionally charged than usual. Sexual and symbolic. Like intimacy means safety. Like connection means survival.

This is why people suddenly...Text Exes, Rekindle Old Flings, Catch Feelings Faster, Confuse Chemistry with Commitment...

Holiday libido is real, and it's physical and psychological.

The Psychology Behind Seasonal Lust

December carries weight. It's a month full of memories, expectations, and reflection. Desire shows up wrapped in emotions we don't always name.

Here's what often fuels seasonal lust...

  • Nostalgia- Thinking about past loves, old versions of yourself, or "what could've been."
  • Loneliness- Even when surrounded by people, the holidays can amplify emotional gaps.
  • Sentimentality- Music, smells, traditions...all sensory triggers tied to intimacy.
  • Family Pressure- Subtle (or loud) messages about partnership, marriage, and "where you should be by now."
  • End of Year Reflection- Wanting to feel chosen, desired, or seen before the year closes.
  • Cuffing Season Expectations- The cultural push to not be alone during winter.

All of this blends together and can make desire feel urgent. Necessary. Meaningful.

Sometimes we want love.

Sometimes we want connection.

Sometimes we just want someone to touch us like the year didn't touch us.

And listen...there's nothing wrong with any of that...as long as we know which desire is talking.

Love vs Lust- The Quiet Difference

Love tends to feel steady, even when it's passionate.

Seasonal lust often feels intense, fast, and emotionally loaded.

Love asks, "How do we grow?"

Seasonal lust asks, "Can you make me feel better right now?"

Neither is bad. But confusing the two can lead to choices that feel heavy once January arrives and the emotional fog lifts.

The goal isn't to suppress desire, it's to understand it.

Sweet · Raw · Sticky Reflection Prompt

Take a breath before you act. Sit with yourself honestly.

  • Sweet- What do I genuinely crave right now, emotionally and physically?
  • Raw- Am I looking for connection...or am I looking for escape, validation, or comfort?
  • Sticky- If I act on this desire, how might it follow me into January and into the duration of 2026?

Because December decisions have a way of sticking.

Seasonal lust doesn't mean you're weak.

It means you're human. Responsive. Sensory. Alive.

But self-awareness? That's power.

So whether you choose to lean into desire, slow it down, or redirect it...do it consciously. Let your wants be honest, not automatic. Let your body speak, but make sure your mind is listening too.

We're closing the year out and setting emotional tone for the next one.

Choose intentionally.
